A district located in the central-southern zone of the municipality of São Paulo, administered by the Santo Amaro subprefecture. It was an independent municipality from 1832 until 1935, when it was reincorporated into the capital. The district is bordered by Roque Petroni Jr. Avenue, Professor Vicente Rao Avenue, Washington Luís Avenue, and the Pinheiros Marginal. Currently, it is the most important center in the southwest region of the municipality, regarded as more significant than the central area of São Paulo for this area and several neighboring municipalities.
It is also the part of the municipality that experienced the highest concentration of German immigrants beginning in 1829. In 1833, it was elevated to municipality status, separating from São Paulo, and remained so until 1935, when it was reincorporated. Starting in 1947, in addition to the Europeans involved in industrial activities, a steady migratory influx of people from the Northeast began, significantly boosting the district's commerce.
The district represents the plurality of Brazilian citizens. Additionally, it includes several other upscale neighborhoods such as Chácara Flora, Alto Da Boa Vista, Granja Julieta, and Chácara Santo Antônio. All of these neighborhoods are under the jurisdiction of the Santo Amaro Subprefecture, despite recent attempts to separate them from Santo Amaro, as they have been subject to heavy real estate speculation by developers. This trend can be empirically observed in the choice of condominium names, advertisements, and sales scripts used by agents.
Currently, it is the second-largest commercial hub in São Paulo, surpassed only by the Historic Center of São Paulo. It offers a wide variety of retail stores, restaurants, and galleries. The area also has a high-traffic shopping mall, Mais Shopping, which includes the Poupa Tempo Santo Amaro service center and is connected to the ViaMobilidade Line 5-Lilac. Other shopping centers nearby include Boa Vista Shopping, Morumbi Shopping, and Market Place.
